In 2005, the Sawtooth Botanical Garden
in Sun Valley, Idaho, received the gift of a giant prayer
wheel for placement in the garden. Three feet high, gorgeously painted and
decorated, it is stuffed with over a million written copies
of the prayer for compassion, and is designed to be turned
by the power of water. The Garden had nowhere to place
such a precious object, and no water for turning it. They
put in an emergency phone call to landscape architect and Zen
priest Martin Mosko, based in Boulder, Colorado.
This is the story of the creation of the
very special landscape Mosko made to contain this precious
object. In this short
film (approx. 26 minutes), we follow Mosko as he shows how
he uses the elements of earth, air, fire, and water to design
an elegant, contemplative garden. We hear how the landscape
has affected the staff of the Sawtooth Garden, the people who
actually built it, and the members of the local community. Finally,
His Holiness the Dalai Lama arrives to bless the land and the
prayer wheel, and to pray for compassion for all beings.
