FOR EVERYONE FOR LANDSCAPE PROFESSIONALS
In a picture-packed one hour Powerpoint lecture, we will explain this unique approach to photographing the landscape. We integrate an explanation of contemplative techniques with practical information on composition. We will help participants use different metaphors to further their understanding of the balance and harmony of the landscape, whether natural or created. This lecture will appeal to both beginners and those with more experience in photography, since we explain an entirely different basis for seeing the world. BEGINNER LEVEL: We will begin with the one hour presentation described above, to orient participants to this approach. Then we will explain basic camera techniques, such as adjusting aperture and shutter speed, and provide an overview of traditional composition. We will discuss a little of the history of fine art photography in order to hone our perceptions. The heart of the workshop is the time we'll spend on the contemplative approach, learning how to "see" from this perspective with exercises and demonstrations. Throughout the workshop, participants will be shooting with their own digital cameras and will receive help from both instructors. For this level of class, participants need only bring their digital cameras and open minds. No experience with photography is required. INTERMEDIATE LEVEL: We will begin with the one hour presentation described above, and move quickly through a review of composition basics and the history of photography. Most of our time will be spent discussing and trying out the contemplative approach to seeing the landscape. Through both exercises and demonstrations, and through discussion of participants' own photographs, we will come to understand how to capture the dynamic balance and harmony of the landscape. For this level of class, participants must come, a digital camera they are comfortable using, a basic understanding of camera mechanics and techniques and open minds. (1) How to access "beginner's mind", and to see with fresh eyes and a still mind. (2) Meditation and contemplation techniques. (3) How to translate the new way of seeing into a language a camera can understand, and how to express yourself in a photograph. (4) Ancient techniques of composition and realization. (5) A better understanding of the structure of a landscape and the structure of a photograph, and how they inter-relate. (6) To awaken your spirit and sensitivity to the beauty in the world you inhabit.
